THE FASHION CENTER BUSINESS IMPROVEMENT DISTRICT 2001-2002 Annual Report

awards of recognition

In 1998, the FCBID established its Award of Recognition, which is given annually to individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the mission of the FCBID. The Awards of Recognition are made at the FCBID Annual Meeting.

This year, we are pleased to recognize City Council Member Christine Quinn and Deputy Chief Thomas Lawrence, commander of the Midtown South Police Precinct.

COUNCIL MEMBER CHRISTINE C. QUINN
Christine Quinn was elected to the City Council to represent District #3 beginning in 1999. Since that time, she has been an active member of the FCBID Board of Directors and a strong supporter of its mission. In 2001, Council Member Quinn lobbied her colleagues within the Council to secure $418,000 in City funding for Fashion District lighting. This generous allocation should allow for the completion of the FCBID’s Bishop’s Crook lighting project. At a time when the Giuliani administration was restricting all BID assessment increases, Council Member Quinn proved to be a strong advocate for the Fashion District and for the FCBID.

DEPUTY CHIEF THOMAS J. LAWRENCE

A 21 year veteran of the New York City Police Department, Deputy Chief Thomas Lawrence assumed command of the Midtown South Precinct in 1998. Since that time, the Fashion District has experienced a significant decrease in criminal activity. Deputy Chief Lawrence has encouraged a close relationship between the Precinct and the FCBID Public Safety department, increasing the effectiveness of our Public Safety initiatives. Under his command, Midtown South has remained committed to addressing the large criminal issues as well as the smaller quality of life complaints that impact the Fashion District community. He has been particularly attentive to the problems along Eighth Avenue, dedicating resources and manpower to that important area.
