2001
marked our Sanitation team’s best year ever! The FCBID received
its highest yearly scorecard averages since our inception, achieving 95.8%
clean for streets and 98.8% clean for sidewalks!
We also hit a milestone as the number of FCBID signature logo garbage
bags we collected reached half a million in early 2002. We collected over
400 tons of trash in 2001, bringing our career grand total to 3,745 tons
of trash collected by our staff from 1993 though 2001. We commend our
Sanitation team for a job well done.
SCORECARD RATINGS
Each month, the City rates our sidewalk and curbside cleanliness using
a rating system from 0% to 100%. Our excellent ratings for 2001 speak
for themselves.

TRUCK
LITTER
The FCBID Sanitation team remains vigilant about truck litter. Before
the FCBID was formed, many will remember that truckers routinely
left litter (shrink-wrap, bands and cardboard) on the streets and
sidewalks during deliveries and often failed to remove packing debris
once the delivery was complete. FCBID Sanitation supervisors now
constantly monitor these situations and forcefully inform truckers
about our ZERO TOLERANCE for litter. We also work closely with the
City Department of Sanitation to ensure that all laws are enforced.
The curbing of truck litter is a significant factor in our high
scorecard ratings

Reminder
to all who receive deliveries: Once litter hits the ground it must be
removed immediately, or a summons will be issued..
SANITATION
IS A COMMUNITY EFFORT
The FCBID Sanitation team works hard to keep our sidewalks and streets
clean, but it is the responsibility of every property owner to ensure
that the following City regulations are met.
NOTICE
TO PROPERTY OWNERS AND GROUND FLOOR TENANTS: it’s the law!
•West
of Eighth Avenue: streets and sidewalks must be swept clean 11:00
a.m. – 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m. by the ground
floor tenant.
• East of Eighth Avenue: streets and sidewalks must be swept
clean 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
by the ground floor tenant. |
Failure to comply will result in violations issued by the City Department
of Sanitation.
| CORNER
NEWSBOXES
The proliferation of corner newsboxes is a problem, not only in
the Fashion District, but citywide. Plastic newsboxes clutter sidewalks
and corners, impeding pedestrian flow, obstructing handicap access
and visually marring the cityscape. Despite the fact that these
newsboxes often sit empty, collecting garbage, they have been protected
under the First Amendment. In 2001 the FCBID joined a group of other
BIDs and met with NYCDOT officials to discuss what all agree is
a serious problem. We look forward to continuing this dialogue with
the Bloomberg Administration.

|
In the meantime, the FCBID has taken the initiative to attach newsboxes
to each other in order to keep corners unobstructed and to maintain as
much of a uniform appearance as possible.
| CORNER
TRASH RECEPTACLES
Commercial and residential tenants’ illegal use of FCBID corner
trash receptacles has been a major problem throughout the years.
With the help of the NYC Sanitation Enforcement Unit and the Superintendents
of Sanitation Districts 4 and 5, the FCBID has greatly curtailed
this
illegal activity.
Reminder: Corner receptacles may not be used for business or residential
refuse.
SANITATION
HOURS OF OPERATION
The FCBID provides street cleaning services seven days a week.
The FCBID’s nineteen member Sanitation team is on duty Monday
through Friday, 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m., while Atlantic Maintenance,
our independent contractor, handles the weekends. |
