SANITATION

FOR 2003, THE FCBID SCORECARD RATINGS by the Mayor’s Office of Operations averaged 97.6% clean for streets and 99.4% clean for sidewalks. These were the highest combined ratings achieved by the FCBID sanitation team in its ten year history. Streets and sidewalks are rated on a quarterly basis.

IT SHOULD BE NOTED THAT, in achieving those outstanding totals for the year, the team posted perfect 100% clean ratings for streets for half the year and 100% clean ratings for sidewalks for three quarters of the year.

The total amount of litter, garbage and debris collected and bagged by the FCBID sanitation team in 2003 totaled 487 tons in almost 80,000 of our signature logo bags. To date, that makes 649,935 bags filled and 4,588.7 tons of garbage collected.

In 2002, the FCBID piloted a new anti-graffiti system on Eighth Avenue. Due to its 100% success rate, the program was rolled out to the whole district in July 2003. Special patented textured paint was applied to all lightpoles and other approved street furniture to thwart graffiti and stickers.

The FCBID completed painting of the intersection traffic signal arms to match the district’s black bishop’s crook poles. The sanitation team also regularly removes snow and ice from catch basins and crosswalks, paints street furniture and removes graffiti wherever possible as part of its maintenance operations. This winter, the FCBID sanitation team was cited by the NYC Commissioner of Sanitation for excellence in snow removal.

The FCBID sanitation team has been outfitted with uniforms, hats, and barrels in the FCBID’s new yellow and green “Authentic New York” colors. All trash receptacles have also been adorned with yellow and green to complete the FCBID’s new corporate look that was established last summer with the Authentic New York banners and Information Kiosk colors. If you see yellow and green, you know you’re in the Fashion District.

Sanitation got
an Authentic New
York look.

The FCBID sanitation team gives constant attention to street and sidewalk cleanliness, in addition to keeping on top of graffiti removal, painting and other maintenance issues. However, district cleanliness does not end there. It is the responsibility of every property owner and ground floor tenant to meet the following City Sanitation regulations:

Notice to Property Owners and Ground Floor Tenants: The law states:

• West of Eighth Avenue: streets and sidewalks must be swept clean 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon and 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. by the ground floor tenant.

• East of Eighth Avenue: streets and sidewalks must be swept clean 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. by the ground floor tenant.

• Property owners must clear their sidewalks of snow and ice within 4 hours of a winter storm. If the storm ends after 9:00 p.m., sidewalks must be cleared by 1:00 p.m. the following day. Failure to comply will result in violations issued by the New York City Department of Sanitation.

The FCBID provides sanitation services seven days a week. Four sanitation supervisors and their 23 member team are on duty Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., while an independent contractor, Atlantic Maintenance, handles the job, 7:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m., on Saturdays and Sundays.
