Since the FCBID launched its
Streetscape Improvement program
in 1996, many street elements have
been implemented to improve the
district’s appearance and safety,
including: decorative lampposts and
waste receptacles, information pylons,
building address plaques, colorful
banners, winter holiday lighting,
and innovative security lighting.
Make a Grand Entrance
In January 2003,
the FCBID launched Make a Grand Entrance, a program to encourage property
owners
and retailers to make important improvements to their
premises. The program was publicized through a guide
to property improvements, which included the offer of
a cash incentive to any property owner or ground floor
tenant who undertakes certain pre-approved improvements.
Dues to its popularity, the program was renewed
for the 2004-2005 fiscal year. To date, 50 property
improvements have been completed or scheduled as a
result of the program.
Multirack Newsboxes
In
2003, the FCBID engaged the award-winning Antenna Design firm to create
a structure that would
combine a multirack newsbox and a planter. The design
was fine-tuned this past year and submitted to NYCDOT
and the Art Commission for review. One multirack will
be installed as a pilot program so that any necessary
changes can be made before the full 25 – 30 multiracks
are fabricated. The design must be approved by
NYCDOT and brought before Community Boards 4 and 5 before the prototype
can be fabricated. Holiday Lighting
One hundred lighted holiday snowflakes were displayed
on district lightpoles from Thanksgiving until February.
Signage
In July 2004, the FCBID installed 300 uniform
street signs on dedicated signage poles throughout the
district’s side streets. The signs reduce visual clutter and
are easier to read than the City signs that had been
attached to district lightpoles. Summer Garden
In Summer 2004, the FCBID again provided café seating
to complement the plantings on the 1411 Broadway
Summer Garden Plaza. Plantings were provided by
Trizec Office Properties, the owners of the building.
Energy Conservation
The FCBID took advantage of a new Con Edison energy
conservation program. The free program enables customers
to replace the lighting in a company’s space with new technology
that conserves energy and provides more natural light that is advantageous
to
product displays. Seminars and mailings were done to promote the program
to owners and tenants.
