2005 - 2006 Annual Report

Report of the Chairman & Executive Director

Now into our second decade of service to the Fashion District community, the Fashion Center Business Improvement District (FCBID) continues to create new programs and to reach important milestones.

This past year saw:

  • Our Sanitation team achieve its highest yearly average rating for street cleanliness
  • Several FCBID public safety officers receive NYPD
  • commendations for their assistance in fighting criminal activity
  • Several homeless individuals find permanent housing with assistance from our outreach program
  • Installation of our prototype custom-designed newsrack
  • The launch of ENVIRONS, the FCBID's newly redesigned quarterly newsletter
  • Completion of our coordinated street signage project
  • Installation of touchscreen information kiosks in the Port Authority to promote Fashion District businesses
  • A successful brokers luncheon to promote area retail space
  • Creation of our first district-wide Arts Festival

This year also marked an important expansion of the FCBID’s programming to better reflect the needs of the district’s changing constituency. Facing the reality that the apparel industry will continue to consolidate and redefine itself due to pressures from global market forces, the FCBID has shifted its marketing and economic development efforts over the last several years to support the diversification of our tenant base without losing the district’s core spirit and identity as the capital of American fashion.

Toward that end, the FCBID has welcomed the development of a growing arts community that is establishing the Fashion District as a new creative center. An increasing number of theaters, artists, architects, galleries, crafters and creative support industries now make their homes in the Fashion District, complementing their fashion industry neighbors and helping to transform the Fashion District into a destination neighborhood.

In Fall 2005, the FCBID created the first annual Fashion District Arts Festival, a major new event designed to pro-mote these new tenants. This weeklong festival encom-passed more than 120 activities and events hosted by over 100 participants and drew more than 2500 people to the Fashion District’s theaters and galleries, as well as to many events created specially for the festival.

You will read more about these, and many other, activities and accomplishments in the pages that follow. It’s been another very active year for the FCBID, and we’ve enjoyed working with all of you who are a part of the Fashion District community. Together, we are making this neighborhood one of the most competitive in Manhattan...... And remember, it all starts with CLEAN and SAFE!
