DESIGNING THE FUTURE

This is not your father's garment center! The Fashion District has undergone tremendous change in the past 5 years as new tenants and owners have been drawn by the District's strategic location, value and convenience. Once the exclusive home of the apparel trade, today's Fashion District has become a location for a variety of commercial businesses, restaurants and retail stores. And now, with the Fashion District positioned as the gateway to the planned Hudson Yards development in West Midtown, interest in this neighborhood is sure to only increase.

In 1997, in order to pave the way for the Fashion District's future, the Fashion Center BID created and began implementing an ambitious Streetscape Improvement Plan, designed to make this neighborhood more appealing to tenants and developers. Combining classic elements like historic bishop's crook light poles and elegant bronze address plaques with modern elements like our custom designed stainless steel gateway information pylons, the Streetscape Improvement Plan, like the fashion District itself, strikes the perfect balance between historic relevance and modern convenience.

To date, the Fashion Center BID has installed:

  • 500 security light fixtures, shedding 200,000 additional watts of light on streets throughout the district.
  • Bronze address plaques, making it easier for customers to find buildings and businesses.
  • 80 decorative bishops crook light poles, referencing the historic lightpole style that was seen in the district in the early 20th century.
  • 7 Gateway Information Pylons with pedestrian orientation information, maps and colorful banners.
  • 100 Colorful banners displayed throughout the district, promoting the convenience of the Fashion District location.
  • 80 decorative trash receptacles.
  • Lighted holiday decorations.
  • The Fashion Center Summer Garden & Exhibition, offering visitors and tenants a relaxing summer oasis and public exhibit in the heart of the District.
  • The Fashion Walk of Fame, honoring the Fashion District's history while providing a handsome tourist amenity.

And that's not all. More improvements are in the works! Over the next several years, the Fashion Center BID has plans to install:

  • 70 additional bishops crook lightpoles to complete the District lighting project.
  • Multi-rack news boxes to organize the street distribution of newspapers.
  • Coordinated uniform street signage.
