In 1992,
twenty six garment center property owners began
the arduous process of forming the Fashion Center Business Improvement
District
(FCBID). Their objectives were to create a cleaner and saferneighborhood so,
when the FCBID officially opened its doors in 1994, we promptly
launched our public safety and sanitation services.
Once these core services were established,
we then expanded our programming to include economic
development initiatives, streetscape
improvements,
information services, promotional
activities,
homeless outreach and other programs
to increase
the competitiveness of the Fashion District.
Over the years, as the district
changed, we did too. As the fashion industry consolidated and non-fashion
tenants began flocking to the Fashion District,
we shifted our programs to appeal to a broader
constituency. We promoted the district’s new
tenant groups, celebrated its rich
history, emphasized its
strategic location, and marketed its restaurant
and retail potential.
Along the way, we achieved many accomplishments and
even earned some accolades – but
most of all, we remained dedicated to our
mission and our
constituency. Today, the Fashion
District is cleaner, safer and more competitive than
ever. Having completed our first decade of service, we thought
it appropriate to take a look back at where we
started and how we got to where we are today.
