The FCBID’s fourth annual Art + Design in the Fashion District, a week-long festival, took place October 15 – 21. The festival, which attracts thousands of visitors to the Fashion District, celebrates the vibrancy and creativity of the neighborhood that is not only a global center of fashion, but has also emerged as a center of cultural and artistic life.

The festival featured over 200 events, 175 participants and 50 venues during the 7-day period. As in years past, the festival kicked off with a free outdoor concert on the plaza at 1411 Broadway, followed by Off-Broadway performances, gallery exhibits, avant-garde per- formance art, and behind-the- scenes visits to artists’ studios. In addition, contemporary takes on traditional art forms such as pottery, papermaking and printmaking were on display. The majority of festival events were free.

One of the most unique aspects of the festival was the creative use of district loading bays as exhibition spaces. The renowned arts organi- zation, chashama, presented 8 exciting performance art installations by emerging New York City artists in loading bays throughout the district, as well as in chashama’s own window performance space. Light installations by Lightswitch were on display in 3 locations throughout the district, including the Port Authority Bus Terminal.

What do Tyra Banks, the Port Authority and the FCBID have in common?
On Monday, September 10, the FCBID hosted a taping of the Tyra Banks Show in the Port Authority. The taping featured a runway fashion show for commuters and visitors with designer Tracy Reese. To acknowledge the FCBID’s assistance in the event, Tyra Banks thanked the BID during the show and links to the FCBID website were featured on the Tyra Banks Show website for three weeks following the event.
