the district today

The Fashion District, also known as the Garment Center, is a vibrant midtown neighborhood with a mix of different uses. Historically, the district was all fashion, all the time. And, to this day, it remains home to some of the greatest names in American fashion. Oscar de la Renta, Donna Karan, and Calvin Klein still manufacture clothing here, despite the national trend to outsource, and many designers have showrooms in the District.

These days, you’re not as likely to see hundreds of clothing racks whizzing down the sidewalks as you might have twenty or even fifty years ago but a visit to the district will likely land you elbow to elbow with some of fashion’s top designers, buyers, and the occasional model. And it’s surely one of the city’s best people watching locales with a constant array of the latest styles and trends parading down Fashion Avenue.

In addition to marquee fashion designers, the Fashion District is home to a burgeoning arts scene, and galleries, theaters, artist studios, architecture firms, graphic design shoppes, and photo and audio engineering studios abound.
