NOW ON DISPLAY | Current Installations: Spring 2012

One of New York’s oldest not-for-profit arts organizations, the Camera Club of New York (CCNY) is a workspace for photographers and a hub for the photo community, offering exhibitions, lectures, workshops, an online newsletter and Guest Blog, and a year-round Darkroom Residency Program.

Today, CCNY is a thriving base for a diverse community interested in both traditional and experimental directions in photography.

JAQ BELCHER at 215 West 38th Street
Selected Works

These works are created using a single sheet of paper, a pencil and an Exacto knife. The larger piece, titled Form is Empty 2011 comprises of 5832 cuts to create the field you see before you. The smaller works are from the Illusion series and have words embedded within, but only through the removal of paper around the text. ‘War’ is created with 1478 cuts and ‘Peace’ 1588 cuts. They are first drawn using a hard graphite pencil, then hand cut, counted and raised.

The exploration of these ideas began taking a visual direction as I was pondering the beauty of a single expanse of white paper. How can one enhance such a simple and beautiful void? And so the process of reduction was born with the resulting works being quietly patterned and complex. They are, a proclamation if you will, to the power of silence, and testify to the practice of ‘being’ in the moment and completely ‘present’.

JESSICA BAKER at 34 West 38th Street
‘Winter Look’

Winter Look is made entirely of materials found in nature and is intended to contrast with the surrounding windows filled with fashion accessories indicative of New York’s metropolitan “personality.”

Brooklyn-based artist Jessica Baker collects leaves, seeds, branches and other fallen materials from trees to create prints on paper, prints on leaves, two and three-dimensional work, and site-specific installations. Her work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions throughout the United States and internationally.

LINDA PLOTKIN at 215 West 38th Street

‘Voices: Music Inspired Monotypes’ Above: Eburnia (2010) 30”x30”

The works in this space, titled Voices, are monotypes inspired by the relationship between harmony in music and harmony in color, a phenomenon realized when listening to the voices in a chorus performing music of the Renaissance. The large format prints were printed by Marina Ancona at 10 Grand Press, and the smaller format prints were printed by the artist at the Lower East Side Printshop. Linda Plotkin’s works are included in numerous private and public collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the Library of Congress, and the Yale University of Art.
