Sample Sale Tips & Tricks

An Insider’s Guide to Deal Hunting

Keep in mind that sample sale shopping is unlike your typical shopping experience. Here are some tips to help you shop like a pro:

Arrive early to avoid long lines and the lunch hour rush. Typically, you will have your best shot at the widest array of price-slashed merch on Day 1 of a sale during the opening hour. Some sample sales replenish goods throughout the week, but in our opinion, it’s typically as good as it’s ever going to get on opening day.

Most sample sales DO NOT have dressing rooms. Even mirrors can be hard to come by. Be prepared to strip down fast in a room full of deal-hunting strangers by wearing form-fitting layers (e.g., leggings and camisoles) underneath an easy-to-remove dress, long blouse or an oversized boyfriend button-up. And bring a friend who can be your mirror.

No baggage! Don’t bring your giant handbag or shopping bags from elsewhere. You will be asked to check all “carry on” items at the door, which usually just means you’ll have to wait in yet another line once you make it inside. Carry your cash and cards in your pockets or bring a wallet with a strap so you can keep your hands free to peruse the racks.

If you see something you like but aren’t sure, hold onto it! Wait until you are finished looking around and then decide.

Inspect all items by checking for holes, broken zippers, and marker markings (e.g., garment has “sample” written with a sharpie across the inside of the back). Happy shopping!

Listings are collected from a variety of sources, including: Clothingline, LazarShopping, and from flyers distributed on the street. To add your sample sale to our listings, please contact us. Please note that all sample sales must be located in or near the Fashion District.
